After Birth | SHOOTS 2018
1 in 10 women commits suicide in pregnancy or the year after birth. Maternal mental health is hidden in plain sight out of fear and shame. How do mothers voice that they are struggling during a time that society expects to be the best time in their life? That they themselves have expected to be? How do we change the dismissive ‘baby blues’ and ‘its your hormones’ into acknowledging that some mothers will experience mental illness during or post pregnancy? By putting the issue in a public space After Birth seeks to change the language around motherhood to something more honest.
Highlight Collective are writer Nicola Schofield and producer Grace Ng-Ralph. They want to tell hidden stories that are female led. On After Birth, they are collaborating with director Amy Hailwood and actress Sara Abanur to bring you monologues FEAR and LEAK. These two monologues are part of a larger multi-media installation and performance by Visual Artist Naomi Kendrick, Musician Jennifer Hardy and Writer Nicola Schofield - which will be presented at Royal Exchange Theatre's festival of new works, Co:LAB 2018.
